"I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry and he who believes in me will never be thirsty."(John 6:35) After feeding the five thousand with five loaves of bread, Jesus withdrew himself from the crowd, knowing that they intended to make him king by force.(6:15) But the crowd went in search of him and found him on the other side of the lake and asked, "What must we do to do the works God requires?" Jesus answered,"The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." How simpler can it get than this! Every other charity a man does is of no greater value to God than believing in his Christ! But they asked, "What miraculous sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you?" How could they ask this dumb question because they just ate from the five loaves that had multipled and before it could be digested, they were asking him for another sign! That sounds like their forefathers grumbling: "Give us water to drink" (Exodus 17:2)They probably hadn't finished eating the quails before they started doubting whether he would provide them with water too! "Do not work for food that spoils but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you ... For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."( John 6,27,33) All of life seems to be about earning our bread but "Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."(Matthew 4:4/Deuteronomy 8:3)
